How to Look and Feel Good — Inside and Out

With most of your time being dedicated to your new bundle of joy, many new moms find their own needs taking a back seat. Spending time fussing over your appearance may seem like a luxury, but taking some time for yourself can actually help energize you for the demands of motherhood. Feeling pleased with your appearance can help lower stress and give you a much-needed boost. Here are some easy, feel-good tips:

  • Stay on top of hygiene. Finding time to shower can be difficult with your little one needing constant attention, but this act of refreshing your body can also be a great way to refresh your spirit. Asking your partner or a friend to watch baby for a few minutes is well worth the effort.
  • Schedule a hair appointment. You might be seeing some changes to your hair as a result of changing hormones, and a lack of free time. For many moms, their last haircut was well before their new bundle arrived. Once your child can be away from you for a few hours, treat yourself to a haircut appointment and maybe a new do! Choose something simple that’s easy to style. Many moms opt for shorter hairstyle or one that can be pulled into a ponytail on busier days.
  • Keep makeup simple. A little concealer can do wonders for any postpartum blemishes and dark under-eye circles. If you’re feeling ambitious, adding some eyeshadow or eyeliner, mascara and lip gloss can go a long way to help perk you up without taking too much time.
  • Choose easy-to-care-for clothing. When it comes to what to wear, focus on finding the right fabrics. Steer clear of anything that requires a lot of care such as silk and rayon or anything that’s “hand wash only.” Look for clothes made of durable, wrinkle-free materials that have some stretch.
  • Add some flair. Whether it’s a favorite piece of jewelry, a colorful scarf or a cute purse, adding a fun accessory to your outfit can help you feel pulled together. Plus, it’s fun to incorporate something unique or exciting into your wardrobe.
  • Give yourself a treat. A little indulgence is another way to make you a priority. Whether it’s a special drink from your favorite coffeehouse or buying some flowers to brighten up your home, giving yourself small “gifts” can go a long way to lift your spirits when you’re giving so much of yourself to your little one.
