At Orlando Health Winnie Palmer, we want to make your birth experience easy, seamless and memorable. We look forward to supporting you and your family through this life-changing experience. Below are answers to the most common questions we receive about labor and delivery and beyond.
When entering the hospital, you have two options for parking. Valet parking is conveniently located at the front entrance. Or, you may self-park in our complimentary parking garage located on Miller Street, across the street from Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children. Both parking options are available 24 hours a day.
You will enter through the front entrance to the hospital located on Miller Street. Upon entering the hospital, you will pass through our security screening and proceed to Guest Services to obtain a patient badge. Visitors will need a photo ID to receive a visitor badge; a driver’s license, passport, work ID or school ID are accepted. Patients and visitors are also required to wear a mask. If you do not have one, one will be provided to you upon arrival.
Check in with Guest Services to receive a patient badge, then proceed to Triage. Triage is located on the first floor by Guest Services.
When you check in to Triage, let them know why you are here. Did your water break, are you having contractions or did your doctor send you for a test or exam? Triage is an acuity-based area which means it is not first come, first served; it is by urgency or need.
For those who have a Birth Plan, please give it to your Triage nurse. If you have not yet created a birth plan, we encourage you to do so before arriving for delivery.
It is best to bring a small bag with your essentials when you check in. Once you are settled into your room, there will be time for your support person to get your other items from the car. Not sure what to pack? Here is list of what to pack for delivery, labor and post-partum stay and items to have at home.
Labor, delivery and recovery will take place in one of our 26 private birthing suites. Orlando Health Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies has more labor and delivery rooms than any other hospital in Central Florida.
With your OB-GYN’s approval, you may move and walk about during labor.
We do support a natural childbirth. We also offer pain management options that are individualized to each patient.
You should discuss pain management options and questions about laboring with your OB-GYN prior to delivery. However, we are the only hospital in the area to offer a “Walking Epidural” in addition to the more familiar “Labor Epidural”.
We provide birthing balls, birthing bars and peanut balls to aid in your comfort and progression of labor. In addition, you may request a mirror if you would like to witness the birth of your baby.
There are four operating rooms conveniently located on the labor and delivery floor.
You may take pictures and video during your stay, including labor. However, we do not permit video or taping of the birth process. Once baby is born, you may “roll camera” again.
Immediately after birth, providing all is well with you and your baby, you will experience skin-to-skin time. Skin-to-skin time is that mommy/baby golden hour right after your baby is born. There are some sweet and significant benefits for skin-to-skin time as well as a special time to bond with your newborn.
Once your baby has arrived and you have shared skin to skin time, you will be moved to one of our three postpartum floors and greeted by your postpartum nurse. All postpartum or mother/baby suites are private and all newborn care, including bathing will take place in the room with you. You can expect to be in your labor and delivery room for a minimum of 2 hours after a vaginal delivery; 3-4 hours after delivery by C-section.
Baby will receive their first head to toe assessment and weighed and measured after you have bonded with your baby, all right in the room with you.
Circumcision is available for those wanting their baby circumcised during their hospital stay. Inform the pediatric hospitalist if you want to circumcise your baby.
Orlando Health Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies has one of the most advanced and respected Level III NICUs in the world. Our neonatologists are among the most knowledgeable and are highly skilled in their field. They have earned this reputation due to their ability to care for the tiniest and most fragile babies with amazing outcomes.
After delivery, baby will receive an identification band for each ankle. Matching wrist bands will be given to mother and one partner or support person. Upon arriving to the postpartum floor, mother and baby will stop outside the nursery door, and baby will receive an ankle monitor. This monitor is connected to our alarm system for an extra layer of hospital security.
We encourage rooming in as it the best way to bond with your baby and learn your baby’s cue’s. However, a medical nursery is available on each postpartum floor should the need arise.
Each postpartum mother/baby suite is private, has a window view, complimentary Wi-Fi and a television. In addition, a murphy bed is provided for the comfort of overnight stays for your partner or support person.
We offer breastfeeding and support for our new mothers. Our nurses are lactation trained and we have a certified lactation specialist on every postpartum floor. Our caring and skilled nurses and certified consultants are available to help provide one-on-one breastfeeding assistance to our new mothers.
Complimentary meals are offered for mothers and may be ordered from the Room Service menu. Your support person is also able to order from the room service menu for a small amount. Other options for food include our 24-hour cafeteria located on the 1st floor. Outside food is permitted, and you may also order food from your favorite restaurant and have it delivered.
Typical stay for mother and baby is 24-48 hours after vaginal delivery and 48-72 hours after delivery by C-section. However, it can vary depending on your health history and delivery. It is important to communicate with your OB to ensure your discharge is both timely and meets your needs.
Car seat assistance is available upon request at discharge by a member of the Transportation Team. Prior to discharge, please let your nurse know of your request for car seat assistance.
During COVID-19, our goal is to continue providing excellent care to our patients and expectant mothers. At this time, all in-person tours are on hold. Virtual tours are available on the Video Tour and Photo Tour tabs.

Women's Triage & Surgery: Patients will be allowed 1 adult visitor (age 18 or older). It must be the same visitor throughout the patient's stay.
Patients and visitors will be required to wear a mask during their visit.

Moms are encouraged to pre-register for delivery to speed up the check-in process upon arrival. To complete registration you will need to show a photo ID, an insurance card and sign your “consent to treat” forms in person either prior to delivery or when you arrive to deliver.
A variety of childbirth education classes, breastfeeding classes and support groups for new parents are available at Orlando Health Winnie Palmer. You must register to attend these classes.
Our pediatric hospitalists will take care of your baby while in the hospital. However, it is important to select a pediatrician prior to delivery. Our pediatricians suggest someone close to home, that you like their bedside manner and philosophy of medicine. Upon discharge, your baby’s records will be sent to your pediatrician. Your baby’s first appointment with the pediatrician will be as few days after discharge.
We offer additional amenities through our Concierge Services to make your experience even more memorable. Options include upgraded linens, celebratory gourmet meals, in-room spa packages and more. You’re sure to find something to enhance your stay.
