Electromyography and Nerve Conduction Studies

Electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies are a group of tests to evaluate the health of muscles and the nerve cells that control them (motor neurons). These studies can help with diagnosis, prognosis and the location of muscle or nerve diseases. Your doctor may order an EMG if you have symptoms that may indicate a nerve or muscle disorder, such as tingling, numbness, muscle weakness, muscle pain or cramping, or certain types of limb pain.

How it Works

Your motor neurons transmit electrical signals that cause your muscles to contract. An EMG uses tiny devices called electrodes to evaluate these signals while muscles are contracting and at rest, translating the signals into graphs, sounds or numerical values, which are then interpreted by our highly trained specialists.

Complete Electrodiagnostic Medicine Consult

At Orlando Health, EMG testing includes an interview, physical examination, nerve conduction study and needle electromyography, performed by physicians specially trained in electrodiagnostics. This comprehensive approach allows our team to provide more than testing, but a true electrodiagnostic medicine consult, with results available to the patient and medical team within the same day.

State-of-the-Art Technology and Expertise

Our state-of-the-art electrodiagnostic lab is staffed by experienced technologists and electrodiagnostic physicians. Our expert team can assist with diagnosis, operative management and planning, as well as localization, leading to optimal outcomes. Our team is under the leadership of Barinder Mahal, MD, fellowship trained in electrodiagnostic medicine. He is nationally known for publishing and lecturing on electrodiagnostics as well as training both medical students and residents.
